What's Holding You Back?

10.5.21

Greetings,

I hope you’re enjoying the change of seasons!

On our recent trip to Guatemala, I shared my personal story (40+ fractures, 16 years in a wheelchair) and asked the question, “What’s holding you back?” Then I shared three false beliefs that I have battled with time and time again throughout my life. Maybe you have too.

The three false beliefs that are constantly trying hold us back are:
  • Scarcity – the belief that “There’s not enough.”
  • Insecurity – the belief that “I’m not enough.”
  • Powerlessness – the belief that – “I can’t do enough.”

Today, I want to unpack the false belief of Scarcity a little more and offer some insight that can help us learn how to RELEASE it. The scarcity mindset looks something like this…

Imagine that you and I are walking down the street. You breathe in. You breathe out. I breathe in. I breathe out. We both need oxygen to survive. Would you worry that there would not be enough oxygen for both of us? Probably not, because air is all around us in abundance.

Now imagine that we are scuba diving, and my scuba tank starts to malfunction. I signal you that I need to share the oxygen in your tank. Suddenly, air becomes a precious commodity. Suddenly, we are asking the question, “Is there enough for both of us?”

The potential scarcity of oxygen changes the way we think, act, and feel about oxygen! The very same thing happens to us in life, especially in the area of money.

The false belief of Scarcity is built on a lie often referred to as the Zero-Sum Fallacy. The secret to RELEASING a false belief is to REPLACE it with the truth! Check out this explanation from our soon to be released PPI PowerBook called CREATE-OWN-GROW.

The bottom line is this: Scarcity is a false belief that will hold you back. How?
  • It will blind you to the God-given opportunities all around you.
  • It will create a defeatist attitude in your heart.
  • It will make you believe that that prosperity is not possible for you.

As I mentioned, we recently had the privilege of teaching CREATE-OWN-GROW to Christian leaders, teachers and business-people in Guatemala (75% of which live below the poverty line). I was deeply inspired by their deep desire to learn and grow and their willingness to embrace change.

If people living in high-poverty conditions can learn to RELEASE their false beliefs and REPLACE them with the truth, maybe we can too!

Let me share one more bottom line. I don’t think anyone’s life improves until there is a deep DESIRE to learn and grow and a WILLINGNESS to embrace change. I would love to hear what you think.
